Melbourne by Bike are Melbourne’s school cycling experts. We are now in our 46th year of serving Melbourne's school community. Owned by Melbourne journalist/photographer Murray Johnson Melbourne by Bike offers hire and tours for school groups of up to 30. Our regular clients include Melbourne's best private and public schools, including MLC, Haileybury College, Brighton Grammar, Loreto Mandeville Hall and many others. Cycling is an ideal part of any excursion to Melbourne or the week-long city programs run by many of Melbourne's leading schools. It's a great leveller, and one of the few physical activities that kids of all shapes, sizes and abilities can enjoy together.
RIDE TO ST KILDA AND BACK ALONG THE BEACH
Our most popular school ride is virtually all off-road to St Kilda then back along the beach, after a relaxing lunch stop at groovy Acland St beside Luna Park historic 1912 roller coaster. Just enjoy the ride, or along the way we can provide an educational commentary covering eucalypts (there are over 800 different kinds), some Aboriginal history, the invention of Aussie Rules football, Australia's war history, architectural heritage and more. Other options include tackling the 32km Capital City Trail – an off-road loop around Melbourne taking in the Yarra, MCG, Collingwood Children’s Farm, Melbourne Zoo and more. Side trips to the top of the 300-metre high Eureka Tower, visits to the zoo, Melbourne Aquarium or Melbourne Museum and many other Melbourne attractions can be incorporated into your bike tour on request or other curriculum interests can be addressed.
GUIDED TOURS FROM JUST $35
A one-hour guided ride is $35, or two hours for $45, three hours $55 and four hours $65. To hire bikes students pay $20 for one hour then just $5 per hour for extra hours.
MELBOURNE SUCCESS STORIES CAN INSPIRE YOUNG CAREERS
Our four-hour city tour is another option with pizza lunch from $79 per person (based on groups of 10 or more). This city adventure takes in sporting icons like the MCG and Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne's coolest neighborhoods, street art and more with a commentary emphasising our multicultural heritage from the 1850s gold rush, and career options.
We can highlight a range of Melbourne success stories including the hairdresser now making millions from cosmetics, the bicycle courier who became a bag millionaire, the lawyer who found success selling cookbooks (and now has 40,000 of them), the poor Italian cyclist who founded Lygon Street, the Olympic pastrycook who founded the Brunetti empire and the aerodynamics engineer behind the Lune croissant success.
CYCLING IS A GREAT LEVELLER: AN ADVENTURE ACTIVITY ALL CAN ENJOY EQUALLY
Whatever you plan to do in Melbourne, cycling is a great way to transport students cheaply from A to B while seeing the city. It's a great antidote to the growing childhood obesity epidemic – an activity students of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels can enjoy together. We'll invoice your school after the event, based on actual numbers who ride on the day. Fighting obesity Obesity is not just a cosmetic issue. It is linked to type 2 diabetes, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders and psychosocial complications. More than one third of high school students nationwide are not getting recommended levels of moderate or vigorous physical activity. Childhood obesity has tripled since the 1970s and the outlook is bleak. Organising a Melbourne by Bike tour can be a vital start to getting kids more active, and showing them that exercise can be fun!

"Each term students from Brighton Grammar School take Melbourne by Bike cycles for a trip down the Yarra as part of their City Exploration. The bike ride reinforces curriculum but also provides a fantastic recreation activity for our students. They look forward to this part of our program immensely, and as teachers it is always good to know that the bikes are of good quality and the staff really helpful.
